Recommendations for Use

SLINGS

In cargo handling operations majority of cargo (rolled steel, timber, construction articles and constructions, equipment, containers, etc.) are moved by cranes. In order to ensure reliable gripping of cargo, its stable orientation in space and uniform distribution of dynamic loads among its elements, load handling fixtures (LHF) are used. The simplest LHF are universal cargo slings.

Prior to operation it is necessary to determine the limit working loads on the slings as well as to take into consideration the mode of their use and the nature of hoisted cargo. Dimensions, shape, weight and expected hoisting method, the working environment and the cargo nature influence a correct decision to be made when selecting the required sling. Above all, a length of the sling should be adequate for the particular mode of hoisting. In case two or more slings are used to lift a cargo, all of them should have the same characteristics. Attention should be paid to the types of cargo handling arrangements planned for use complete with a sling: they should match its type and parameters.

The company PJSC «PA «STALKANAT-SILUR» produces the following sling types intended for lifting cargo:

-        wire rope slings

-        textile tape slings

-        chain slings

 

WIRE ROPE SLINGS

Steel wire rope slings are applied for fixing cargo to hooks of cargo lifting machinery and for moving heavy large-size cargo. Cargo is to be lifted with the aid of slings which match the mass and nature of hoisted cargo with due account of the number of sling legs and the angle of their inclination. Cargo wire rope slings are made according to DSTU Б В.2.8-10-98 and in compliance with the requirements of GOST 25573-82.

At a production department of PJSC «PA « Stalkanat-Silur» absolutely all types of wire rope slings are produced as well as guy ropes, suspension cables and other rope-containing elements of machinery and facilities.

The main types of wire rope slings are:

  1. Eye and eye wire rope sling - EERS. Double-loop universal sling is a wire rope section having woven loops on both ends. When slinging a cargo, it can easily be run through apertures in parts, lifting eyes, frames, rings, eyeholes, etc. making several legs which increase its load-hoisting capacity. Two methods of wire rope end splicing are used: manual splicing and pressing in aluminium or steel bushing.
  2. Wire rope eye sling - RES. A universal eye sling is an endless wire rope section. This sling, same as the double-leg rope, is used for slinging most diverse cargo. Lashing of cargo with an endless sling is made, as a rule, with the noose which guarantees strong and reliable slinging. According to DSTU Б В.2.8-10-98, splicing of wire rope slings is to be done manually.
  3. One-leg wire rope sling - 1CK. A one-leg sling consists of a rope leg with a loop at one end while the other end has hoisting hooks (GOST 25573), a latch hook, a clamp or another end grip. Such slings are used for moving loads provided with lifting eyes, frames, hooks or other arrangements.
  4. Multi-leg wire rope sling - 2CK - 4CK. This sling type consists of several legs connected together with a common steel link. It is intended for slinging loads in two, three or four points. Such slings are widely used when handling heavy loads, casings, etc. provided with lifting eyes, eyeholes, braces, etc. Depending on the loads handled the slings are provided with special grips.

TEXTILE SLINGS

Textile slings belong to a new class of cargo hoisting arrangements meeting modern requirements when performing diverse cargo handling works. They are made of up to 300 mm wide heavy-duty synthetic polyester woven tape. Slings are colour-codified in compliance with the EC standards and have a safety margin 7:1.

The main advantages of textile slings are:

  1. Cargo safety. When using textile slings, the cargo (particularly those with soft edges or thoroughly prepared surfaces) is less damaged at hoisting. This is the main advantage of textile slings.
  2. Small weight. Textile slings are considerably lighter than metal slings, it is particularly evident when working with high-capacity slings. It is easier to handle the sling itself, lead a sling below the cargo and fix it on the crane hook.
  3. Safety. It is safer to work with such slings (textile slings have no protruding metal hairs which cause injuries). Therefore their use helps to fix a very important problem - personnel safety.
  4. High resistance to wear. Textile slings are more durable. They are less susceptible to deformation changes and take the initial form quite quickly. Textile slings are less susceptible to abrasive materials and many chemicals (acids, alkali, oxidizers, sea water).
  5. Compactness. Textile slings are more compact, they can be easily shaped as required, therefore their storage and transportation is simpler.

Textile slings are subdivided into tape slings and tubular woven slings. Tape slings are subdivided into eye and eye slings (EES) and eye slings (ES).

Eye and eye slings can be provided at ends with textile eyes, load hooks and shackles, or be made combined, i.e. have a load hook or a shackle at one end and a common textile eye on the other end, the latter should have at least double reinforcement and a special protection pad.

Tape slings are commonly made as one-and-two layered and have a capacity to 25 t. Eye slings are made as a closed loop.

The production department of PJSC «PA «STALKANAT-SILUR» produces the following types of textile tape slings: textile eye and eye slings (TEES), textile eye slings (TES), textile one-leg slings (1 CT) and textile multi-leg slings (2CT-4CT).

CHAIN SLINGS

Chain slings are convenient in use and extremely durable. PJSC «PA «STALKANAT-SILUR» produces chain slings of the 8th strength grade made of welded connection elements. The load-lifting capacity of these slings varies from 1.1 to 40.0 t.

The main advantages of chain slings are:

-        serviceability at high temperatures to 3000 C and in aggressive environment;

-        absence of elastic deformation (for installation works);

-        indifferent to sharp edges of cargo;

-        compact, easily folded, durable;

-        long service life;

-        easily connected.

Chain sling types of the strength grade T(8):

-        1CЦ - one-leg;

-        2СЦ - two-leg;

-        4СЦ - four-leg'

-        УСЦ - universal.
